Globalization and advances in modern
technology have led to expansion of translation and interpretation (T&I)
programs at postgraduate as well as undergraduate levels. Particularly, there
seems to have been an increase in the number of programs offering research
degrees in translation and interpretation, both M. Phils and PhDs, over the
last decade, and the number of research students in such programs has increased
too. But how such programs are meeting their needs is very much unknown and
it is yet for us to find out how they might be improved to better train the
future contingence of translation educators and researchers. This study is
therefore to address this issue, through a qualitative case study of the needs
of T&I research students in Hong Kong tertiary institutions. What can
be done to enable T&I research programs to better meet students’
needs will be the focus of the study.
