NFLC-sponsored Pre-Conference Workshop:

E-Learning in Translation and Interpretation: Current Experience, Future Possibilities

This NFLC-hosted workshop is of particular interest to translation and interpreting program directors, faculty, and workplace supervisors who see the need for wider availability of professional development opportunities for translation and interpreting. The workshop will explore ways in which “best practices” in the teaching of translation and interpretation can be supported through interactive, multimedia materials -- whether in CD/DVD or on-line format. The workshop will:

• Open with a discussion by interpretation and translation educators who will highlight teaching techniques and practices shown to be particularly effective.
• Move on to provide an analysis of distance, blended, and technology-assisted learning, focusing on what it offers to T & I instruction and training, specifically. NFLC instructional systems design and technology experts will discuss opportunities and constraints. They will also demonstrate NFLC-designed, DVDbased interpreter and translator training prototypes and, thereby, the potential uses of multimedia and computer-delivered training to enhance autonomous practice – both as a supplement to face-to-face class time and as a component of stand-alone DL programs.
• Conclude with a “walking tour” of models of on-line and blended courses with references to specific T & I programs. A general discussion of the state of the field and possible new directions will follow.

Experience LangNet Yourself Pre-registered participants will receive temporary passwords to the LangNet system which currently has over 2400 hours of supported practice in Listening and Reading in some 16 languages, mostly at higher levels of proficiency. Demonstration DVD’s will also be provided at the workshop along with e-copies of handouts.
